ADVANCE TRAUMA

A clinical trial to determine if ATLS® improves patient outcomes

ADVANCE TRAUMA is a batched stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial in India aiming to compare the effects of Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) training with standard care on outcomes in adult trauma patients. It is an international collaboration led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, the George Institute for Global Health in India, and the University of Birmingham.

Summary

The ADVANCE TRAUMA trial is a major clinical study testing whether ATLS® training for doctors improves outcomes for people with serious injuries. ATLS® is a structured training programme used around the world to help clinicians quickly recognise and treat life-threatening injuries, but there is currently no strong evidence that it improves patients’ outcomes.

The trial is taking place in multiple hospitals in India. All hospitals begin by caring for patients as usual. Over time, each hospital then starts delivering ATLS® training to staff, and outcomes before and after are compared. This step-by-step approach allows every hospital to take part while helping researchers assess whether the training leads to better outcomes.

By comparing how injured adults do before and after ATLS® training in the same settings, the study aims to generate clear evidence to help improve trauma care globally.
